I have been the Commissioner for the off-island territory consisting of Pointe Fortune, Rigaud, Hudson and St. Lazare for 13 years. I have been in the field of special education for over 40 years, first as the head teacher of Mountainview School working in partnership between the EMSB and Batshaw Youth Centres, and presently at the Centre of Hopes and Dreams with severely handicapped adults. I also spent 3 years in the Arctic region of James Bay working with indigenous youth for the Cree School Board. Before becoming commissioner I was heavily involved with the LBPSB parent community as the Chair of the Governing Board and the regional and CPC representative at Mount Pleasant Elementary School and then later on the Governing Board, regional and CPC representative of Westwood High School. I am the parent of a special needs student who successfully completed his education in the LBPSB’s inclusive community and who has since graduated in Education from McGill University so I fully understand ,from all perspectives, the challenges ,anxieties and dreams of parents of children with special needs.
