Wusua Mitchell
Elementary School Principal
Lester B. Pearson School Board

Wusua Mitchell, a native of Lachine, is an elementary school principal with over two decades of experience in the field of education where she has continually demonstrated an unwavering commitment to student-advocacy.

At a young age, Wusua vividly remembers choosing the role of the teacher whenever playing school with her siblings and neighbourhood friends. As a teenager, Wusua made the career choice to become a teacher as she was dishearten by the teacher-centered approached to teaching throughout her primary and high school years. She knew there was a better way to teach and connect with children.

Wusua attended McGill University and received a Bachelor of Education-Elementary in 1996. She began her teaching career as a first grade teacher at Garvey Institute. With a strong emphasize on Black History, Wusua engaged her students in a variety of learning experiences celebrating their cultural heritage. During that year, Wusua became a member of the Quebec Board of Black Educator (QBBE) and was the Co-Chair of the Youth Committee. Wusua was a member of the planning committee for National Council of Black Educators of Canada Third National Conference held in Montreal, in 1998. The McGill graduate later worked at Meadowbrook Elementary School, in Lachine as a French Second Language teacher.

In 1999, Wusua relocated to Washington D.C. where she spent the following six years as a first grade teacher at Beauvoir National Cathedral Elementary School, one of the most prestigious primary school in the area. Among the numerous committees she sat on at Beauvoir, Wusua was co-chair of the Multicultural Taskforce, and was a presenter at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) 16th People of Colour Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. While in Washington, Wusua went on to complete a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Trinity University. In 2005, Wusua returned to Montreal and taught Social Sciences at Beurling Academy for a year before being appointed vice-principal at St-Lawrence Academy in 2006 at the age of 32.

During her 14 years as an in-school administrator at the Lester B. Pearson School Board, Wusua worked at elementary schools in LaSalle, Beaconsfield and Dorval. She has been purposeful in her interventions with staff to recognize injustices while emphasizing initiatives that promote equity and meet the diverse needs of students. Wusua is the proud parent of two young children and currently the principal of Dorval Elementary school.
