The Equipment Services Department is composed of qualified employees in many different areas of specialty, including engineering, architecture, maintenance, various construction trades and caretaking. The essence of our department is to address Strategic Direction Three, Physical Plant, of the school board’s Strategic Plan. We are dedicated to improving the learning and working environments of the students and staff of the Lester B. Pearson School Board.
Our mandate consists of managing construction projects, as well as performing a multitude of day-to-day tasks. These operational tasks range from fire and security systems maintenance, heating and air- conditioning maintenance, cleaning of ventilation systems, energy management, waste disposal, snow removal, grass cutting and delivery of mail and goods to schools, just to name a few.
Strategic Direction Three: Physical Plant
Increase student success by implementing and monitoring a long-range plan to ensure a safe, healthy and pleasant learning and working environment.
The new school in St. Lazare will allow LBPSB to better serve its community off-island. The Eco-Energy projects, done in partnership with Johnson Controls, will allow LBPSB to save over $1.2 million per year in energy costs and is self-financed through those savings. We have also made significant progress addressing the deferred maintenance of our roofs by carrying out major work at eight schools. The pool at Beurling Academy was also re-opened for student activities.
This year we undertook the planning of major programs for 2006-2007 including the following:
Building improvements which were approved as a result of the Major School Change process.
Expansion of Westwood High School Junior:
Campus to accommodate an additional 270 students.
Basic Capital Programs:
Roofing, HVAC, architectural and safety projects
Roofing:
New funding from a “mesure” from MELS for major building infrastructure work. This will allow the school board to effect major roofing work at the West Island Career Center, St. Thomas High School, Place Cartier and Soulanges Elementary.
The replacement of the windows at Beaconsfield High School and Pearson Adult Career Center will also be done due to this additional funding.
The Renovation of high school (Cycle 1) science laboratories to meet the requirements of the Education Reform.
The improvement of the efficiency, and the effectiveness of our caretaking services was again a priority for us this year. Our caretaking staff is composed of almost 200 employees dedicated to providing a clean and safe environment for our staff and student population. The on-going purchase of new caretaking equipment provides us the opportunity to better serve our population.
