Information Guide - Verification of Judicial Records
Guide - La vérification des antécédents judiciaires

Student Teachers And The
Declaration Concerning Judicial Records

Recent changes to the Education Act have imposed obligations on school boards and private schools with respect to the legislative provisions concerning judicial records. In particular, before hiring a person who would be required to work with minor students or be regularly in contact with them, a school board or private school must ensure that the person has no judicial record relevant to the functions that could be assigned to him or her.

Do student teachers also have to complete and forward a declaration concerning a judicial record? This decision is left to the discretion of the individual school board or private school.

The Safe School Policy of the Lester B. Pearson School Board states that everyone in the school board community is entitled to a safe, secure and respectful environment. As a safety measure to help ensure that these rights are upheld, the school board now requires student teachers to complete and forward a declaration concerning a judicial record.

As a student teacher embarking on a training session at one of our schools/centers it is very important that you complete the attached form entitled, DECLARATION CONCERNING A JUDICIAL RECORDprior to commencing your training session.

Instructions:

•    Download the attached form concerning judicial records

•    Complete sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the form.

•    Read carefully the information in section 4 of the form

•    Sign and date the form.

•    Return the original, signed form by mail to the address listed below at least (10) days prior to beginning your         training session.

The Human Resources and Payroll Department provides a variety of services to all employees in the school board. There are approximately 4,500 employees board-wide. The department constantly seeks to improve its delivery of services to the schools and individual employees.
Teachers
The recruitment of new teachers remains a top priority. This past March, more than 250 candidates were interviewed and assessed. Contracts were offered to our top candidates within weeks of the interviews and this enabled us to hire excellent candidates in key subject areas such as Mathematics and Science.
Several workshops for new and second year teachers took place last year under the leadership of Jim MacKinnon. These workshops are invaluable in not only giving new teachers great tools for the classroom, but also in developing long term relationships with their peers.
Support Staff
The union (Independent Association of Support Staff) and the Human Resources Department communicate regularly to ensure that all new positions are posted and filled promptly.
School Administrators
The Human Resources Department work closely with school administrators in offering support in many areas including: service contracts; transactions forms; insurance information; hiring of teachers and support staff.
New Administrators
The mentoring program for new administrators (first and second year), under the direction of Jim MacKinnon continues to flourish. This program offers workshops throughout the year for our new administrators. They also receive individual support on an ongoing basis from Jim MacKinnon, Sector Directors, and Human Resources.
Contract Negotiations
The 2009-2010 school year is seeing the beginning of provincial contract negotiations. These negotiations will be followed by local negotiations.
